The Competition

Formula Student (FS) is Europe's most established educational engineering competition. It began as Formula SAE in the US in 1980 and has now spread to over 10 countries around the world, with over 400 universities taking part. FS is a multidisciplinary, engineering project to design, build, market and race a small, single seat racing car, undertaken by international teams from across the globe. The competition aims to develop the skills of enterprising and innovative young engineers and provide a hands-on project for them to put their knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts to the test on.

The format of the event is such that it provides an ideal opportunity for the students to test, demonstrate and improve their capabilities to deliver a complex and integrated product in the demanding environment of a motorsport competition. Testing not only their engineering knowledge, but also the business and costing side of a project which is demanded in the working world.

Here at Team SURTES the project forms part of our degree-level project and is viewed by the motorsport industry as the standard for engineering graduates to meet, transitioning them from university to the workplace.

Team SURTES has entered the UK competition (in Class 1) since 2008 with best results to date of: 12th place overall and 5th UK team, achieved in 2015. In 2016 SURTES moved to an electric powertrain and was one of the first UK teams to successfully compete with an electric car.
